Fat Brat: Accepting the Word “Fat”

I’ve been called “fat” almost my entire life. The word was spewed at me as an insult from kids on the playground in elementary school, boyfriends, and mean girls in high school. The word is still used to belittle me and many other women. And while I used to let it get to me in high school, I’ve stopped letting the word “fat” bother me. It’s what I am: fat. AND IT’S NOT A BAD WORD.

I’ve changed a lot throughout my life, but one thing has always remained; I’ve always been a big girl. Through my life changes and different stages, I have learned to love and accept my body, and with that, I have also changed the way I view the word “fat.” Sure, I have days where I wish the fat away and I let the online bullies get to me—NEWS FLASH: EVERYONE HAS THESE DAYS! But I am happiest when I accept myself and embrace the fat! YEAH, I SAID IT: EMBRACE THE FAT! It’s me, it’s beautiful, and it makes me unique. And guess what? More women in the U.S. are “fat” than they are skinny. And what better way to hold myself accountable for reclaiming the word “fat,” by wearing it proudly!

My good friend Corissa from the plus size lifestyle blog Fat Girl Flow designed these amazing t-shirts that are giving me all of the body positive vibes and encouraging me to embrace my self and my body to the fullest! You can get your top here: Fat Brat Tee
I paired the t-shirt with this plus size metallic skirt from Forever 21, because why not?!
SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 2X, which is my usual size, and the t-shirt fits perfectly! It’s super stretchy. I am also wearing a size 2X in the metallic skirt, which is my usual size, and the fit is spot on!

Don’t you just love a piece of clothing that makes you feel girly and also gives off romantic vibes? Yeah, ask me that question a month ago and I would have rolled my eyes. But lately, I have been searching for femininity and romance every where. And it has totally translated into the pieces I have been featuring on my blog and wearing.

This Bardot Culotte Jumpsuit from Yours Clothing is a piece unlike any other in my closet. I love that while this romper loosely drapes and is comprised of a lot of fabric, it’s still flattering and flirty. Since I am only 5 ft. 2 in. tall, I paired the romper with a pair of lace up block heels to elongate my figure. I feel like this romper might drown my figure if I wore flats.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in this jumpsuit, which is a size larger than my usual size and it fits perfectly. I would suggest ordering one size larger than your usual size to achieve that draping effect.

Not Your Average Romper

I’m deeming this post a Fashion Nova appreciation blog post—and no, this is not sponsored! When the brand first hit the Instagram scene with it’s booty hugging jeans, I was skeptical, but lately, I have been obsessed with all of the plus size options the store has. And get this, they update their clothing selections on a weekly basis. When I started looking at clothing from Fashion Nova, I became more open minded. The clothing boasted high slits, bright colors, bold prints, and showed lots of skin. I was impressed. Usually, plus size clothing is not this edgy or sexy. And in a world of loose fitting and boring plus size clothing options, I needed a little Fashion Nova to bring me back to the very reason I fell in love with fashion: Being able to express the many sides and styles of myself.

A couple of months ago, I would have never pushed myself to embrace more colors or risky designs. I always shied away from rompers—especially form fitting ones—but when I saw this Roll With The Clique Romper, I was feeling adventurous, and I knew I had to try it out. This piece is so fun and sexy, but unfortunately the only way to get it on and off is with a zipper in the back. So as long as you have a girl squad or friend to help unzip you during bathroom trips, you’re good to go! I’d love to wear this out to the club. It would be a head turner, and I feel like it’s different from every other romper out there.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a 3X, which is a size larger than my usual size. The shorts and sleeves fit pretty snug, but the top is stretchy.

Power Moves

I spend most of my weekdays in the office—about 40 hours to be exact. So when I create an office look that I love, it’s a huge win because these are the outfits that I have to wear every day. Just because I have a dress code to follow at work, doesn’t mean that my outfits have to be boring and basic. For example, this ensemble totally adheres to my company’s dress code, but this electric yellow neoprene pencil skirt and the bell sleeves on this elbow flounce top from Eloquii fall far from average. And not to mention that I feel like a total boss when I am wearing this look!

This entire look is from Eloquii, and I only saw it fit to name this post and look “POWER MOVES” because Eloquii is making quite the power move itself. In August, Eloquii will open its second brick and mortar store in Chicago! The store will be located on the Magnificent Mile in The Shops at North Bridge. I can’t wait until the store opens, and I will be sure to keep you all posted with the details.

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing an 18 petite in the neon skirt, which is my usual size, and a size 18 in the flounce top, which is my usual size. Both garments fit true to size!

Kimono Vibes

Chicago fashion blogger, Chicago fashion, midwest, fashion nova, fashion nova curve, blogger review, natalie craig, natalie in the city, plus size fashion, plus size fashion blogger, curves and confidence, plus size kimonos, affordable plus size clothing, fatshion, fat girls can't, embrace your curves, confident plus size women

I have one question, WHO AM I?! I cannot believe that I have traded my all-black-everything wardrobe in for florals and bright colors. While I would have never thought this style change would have happened, I am so happy that it did. Being more open-minded to different clothing styles, colors, and fits have turned me into a totally different fashionista.

My latest floral obsession is from Fashion Nova Curve. This Look At Me set is made up of polyester shorts, a cropped tank top, and a jacket. I love, love, love the set! I can’t wait to wear this kimono jacket with other outfits. It’s so divine and fun! This look makes me feel sexy and flirty. While the tank top and shorts are very thin and show a lot of skin, the oversized kimono adds some coverage and brings ties the three-piece look together. If you are totally loving this set, use the code “NATINTHECITY” for 20% off!

As you can probably see, I also wore this top without a bra, which works for my C cup-size chest. If you have any personal questions about fit, please send me an email at natinthecity@gmail.com!

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a 3x in the top, shorts, and the jacket, which is a size larger than my usual. the material doesn’t stretch at all—other than the waistband on the shorts. So, I suggest ordering one or two sizes larger than your usual size.

EDIT: 10/31/21: Are you petite and plus size like me? I’m 5’2 and a size 18! If so, you might want to check out my blog post about 12 petite plus size clothing brands to shop to learn where you can find the perfect jeans for your figure!

A major brand reposted one of my outfit photos on their Instagram page over the weekend. The likes went down, and the comments went up—and they weren’t good. People quickly posted out my stomach and how it looked in a high-waist denim skirt. The lower area of my stomach, which I call my “pouch,” has always been a huge insecurity of mine. I usually wear blouses and tops that cover this area, and I rarely ever tuck in my tops or wear crop tops with fitted bottoms. I get nasty comments all the time, but these ones stuck with me because I decided to embrace my “pouch” with this outfit regardless of the way I felt about it. But ladies, I’m going to keep it moving, and the only way I see fit to say “F U” to all the haters is to post another outfit showing off my pouch!

THIS IS A RARE SIGHT. NEVER HAVE I EVER LEFT THE HOUSE IN A PAIR OF JEANS WITH A CROP TOP. But today, I embraced my body in these plus size Cello Jeans and this gorgeous H&M ribbon-embroidered crop top. I know it can be hard to have confidence when people are constantly tearing you down, but the best way to rise above it is to just keep rocking your curves, and most importantly, keep wearing the trends and clothes you LOVE.

How I really feel about mom jeans

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in Cello Jeans, which is a size larger than my usual size. I would suggest ordering two sizes larger than your original size because the jeans do run small!
