Hi, I'm Natalie...
I am 5'2 and a size 18, which means I am petite AND plus size. Those two sizing terms might seem like polar opposites, but full figures come in a variety of shapes and sizes—one of those being short! As a petite plus size fashionista, it has been extremely difficult to fit into fashion and find clothing made for my body. But I'm here to share my petite plus style tips with you and to show the world that short, plus size women belong in fashion!

LIFE UPDATE & HOW I GET UNSTUCK

Chicago Plus Size Petite Fashion Blogger Natalie in the City reviews skinny jeans and cute quarantine outfits

Wow, it has been almost two months since I have written a blog post. I am so sad that I haven't made time to do the things I truly love, which are write and talk to you. However, I am hoping that this blog post is my entry back into my little blogging groove.

But let's address why I have been absent...

Sweatpants all day...
The first reason is simply just that I am not wearing clothes much these days. Since March, I have been working remotely, and my work from home outfits aren't always the most glamorous. Some days, I wear a beautiful plus size satin robe and other days, I am in plus size Nike sweatpants with my hair looking like a bird's nest. And to be quite honest, on the days where I do go out to dinner with friends or leave the house for any reason, I feel so overwhelmed by the idea of getting dressed. Most of my clothes don't fit me the way they used to, and I have just sort of lost touch with what I feel most confident in. My body has definitely changed as there has been some quarantine weight gain, which is totally fine. I am used to my body changing, and I accepted that since I was not going to be moving my body as much and staying home most of the time.

Work, work, work...
Secondly, I have become even busier at work. If you are a long-time reader of Natalie in the City, you have probably heard me reference my 9-to-5 job. I am a magazine editor, and I recently took on more responsibility, which is so exciting. It does force me to push my blog to the side some days, but I am creating a plan that allows me to balance both perfectly.

Preserving my energy and exploring my feelings...
Lastly, I have been grappling with a lot of feels lately, which I am sure that we all are experiencing. Living life during a global pandemic that has put a pause on all of your plans or drastically changed your path is difficult and trying. I have been really trying to find peace and comfort in the unknown, which is so hard for me being a control freak and all. So I have spent a lot of time shifting and nursing my energy and leaning into my feelings, which takes up a lot of emotional space and time. Of course, when I talk to you, I want to be able to encourage and inspire you! And I thought that if I didn't have something glowing and positive to say, then I should just take a break from writing. However, I realize that it may benefit you to know that I am also struggling with this period of life just like everyone else and that it's totally normal to feel this way. With that being said, if you need to talk about ANYTHING, I am always one email (natinthecity@gmail.com) or Instagram DM away.

How do I get unstuck?
I noticed that I have been feeling stuck in life—and I am sure that after spending more than six months in a quarantine routine, most people are also feeling stuck right now. So two weeks ago, I took it upon myself to switch up my routine. I went from going to bed at 2 AM—after scrolling endlessly and passively on TikTok and Instagram for hours—to getting into bed before 11 PM. On Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's, I wake up at 6 AM to head to the gym, which is downtown so it gives me an excuse to get out and about. On Tuesday's and Thursday's, I let myself sleep until around 7 or 8 AM and then I get right to work. Throughout my day, I reward myself with leisure breaks where I do something that makes me happy like dancing, cooking, crafts, or taking photos. As my day winds down, I try to stay off my phone and hang out with my boyfriend Terry, friends, or my parrot Rico. It's only been two weeks, but I feel like I have seen a difference. So if you're feeling stuck, you may want to consider creating a new routine that adds some excitement and movement to your life. I also recommend putting an outfit together that makes you feel sexy and beautiful like a plus size slip dress–even if you are just working from home!

I started this little routine shift by asking myself how I wanted to feel every day. My answers:

  • Energized
  • Excited
  • Happy
  • Healthy

After determining how I wanted to feel, I figured out which activities would point me in the direction of those feelings, and then I built a routine around those goals.

And today, the activity I chose to take part in that makes me feel happy, excited, and energized was writing this blog post.

So, shall we get into what I am wearing? I am dying to talk about it. Even though I am not getting dressed a lot during quarantine, I have been trying to push my limits when it comes to the clothes I am wearing and my style. Pair my new and adventurous attitude with a changing body and you have a disaster. As I mentioned, my body has changed a little bit, which means I can easily catch myself in a negative self talk cycle every time I get dressed and my clothes aren't fitting, but I am working on it! I also need to remind myself that I don't have to try and be someone or something I am not. Sometimes, I try to dabble in trends or clothes that aren't me because I want to take cool blog photos or expand my wardrobe. But I need to remind myself that I have spent years exploring my body and studying the clothes that I feel amazing in. Yes, I should always be open to the occasional adventurous piece, but I should also stick to styles that I love. Long story short: this outfit is one that I tried, and while I appreciate certain aspects of it—like these plus size skinny jeans, I think I am going to leave it at that. The plus size corset top was a bit of a risk for me because I just never know how to style it. What do you think? I tried to wear it in a few different ways. Similarly to my new routine, I am going to try to stick to styles that I feel most comfortable in until I get to know and understand my new curves and find styles that enrich me. I got both the jeans and the top from Fashion Nova! The next time you shop there, use the code NATINTHECITY for 20% off!

Before I get back to my day, I wanted to let you know that every storm runs out of rain. If you're feeling stuck and hopeless right now, just know that it's temporary. Do something that excites you today! XO

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in the jeans and a 2X in the top, which are my usual sizes, and both garments fit perfectly!
